How grind size and water temperature change your coffee
Brewing coffee is a balance between extraction, time, grind size, water temperature and recipe.
When coffee is under-extracted, it can taste sharp, sour or thin. When it is over-extracted, it can become bitter, dry or heavy.
The goal is not to follow one perfect number, but to find a balanced cup that tastes sweet, clean and enjoyable.
This guide was created for people brewing Colombian Arabica coffee with a medium or omni roast profile.
It is a practical starting point for home brewers who want to understand why their coffee tastes too acidic, too bitter, too weak or not sweet enough.
Find your brew balance
Move the grind and temperature sliders to see how small brewing changes can affect acidity, sweetness, bitterness, body and clarity in your cup.
Balanced
This setting should produce a sweet, clean and balanced cup.
This is a good starting point. Adjust one variable at a time and taste the difference.
How to use this brewing tool
Choose your brewing method, then move the grind size and water temperature sliders.
The simulator will show how your cup may change in terms of acidity, sweetness, bitterness, body and clarity.
A finer grind usually increases extraction because the water has more contact with the coffee.
A coarser grind usually lowers extraction. Higher water temperature can also increase extraction, while lower temperature can soften bitterness and make the cup feel gentler.
Use this tool as a guide, not as a fixed rule. Every grinder, coffee, water and brewer behaves differently.
For the best results, change only one variable at a time and taste the difference.
